Odds meaning in one line: odds are the price a sportsbook puts on an outcome, and they tell you what a winning stake collects. A ₱100 stake at decimal 2.50 returns ₱250, of which ₱150 is profit. The same price can be written as fractional 3/2 or American +150, so this page shows you how to move between all three. For where odds sit on a bet slip, the sports betting terms overview of the whole slip lays it out.
All figures here are invented round numbers for teaching, not prices from any event or operator.
Odds meaning in one table
Every format answers the same two questions: what do I collect, and how likely does the book think it is. Use the table to see one price in three forms.
| Decimal | Fractional | American |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | 1/2 | -200 |
| 2.00 | 1/1 | +100 |
| 2.50 | 3/2 | +150 |
| 3.50 | 5/2 | +250 |
Each row is one price. At 2.50, a ₱100 stake returns ₱250 in every format.
How to read odds on a slip
Reading odds is a four-step routine. It works for every format once you know which one you are looking at.
- Spot the format: a decimal point (2.50), a slash (3/2) or a plus or minus (+150).
- Convert to decimal if the format is not decimal.
- Multiply your stake by the decimal figure to get the total return.
- Subtract your stake to get the profit.
For example, a ₱200 stake at 1.75 returns ₱350 and profits ₱150. The over under meaning example shows the same routine applied to a total line.
Decimal odds
Decimal odds are the total return per ₱1 staked, stake included. The formula is return = stake × decimal odds, and profit = stake × (decimal odds − 1).
| Stake | Decimal odds | Return and profit |
|---|---|---|
| ₱100 | 1.50 | ₱150 and ₱50 |
| ₱100 | 2.50 | ₱250 and ₱150 |
| ₱500 | 1.80 | ₱900 and ₱400 |
A decimal figure below 2.00 is a favourite and above 2.00 is an underdog, because 2.00 is an even-money price.
Fractional odds
Fractional odds state the profit first. The fraction 5/2 means ₱5 of profit for every ₱2 staked, so profit = stake × 5/2, and decimal odds = 1 + 5/2 = 3.50.
- A ₱100 stake at 5/2 profits ₱250.
- The return is ₱250 plus the ₱100 stake, which is ₱350.
- 1/2 means ₱1 profit per ₱2 staked, so ₱100 profits ₱50.
The common trap is reading 5/2 as 2.5. The decimal price is 3.50 because the stake comes back too.
American odds
American odds use a plus or minus sign around 100. A plus number is the profit on a ₱100 stake, and a minus number is the stake needed to profit ₱100.
| American | Reading | Decimal |
|---|---|---|
| +150 | ₱100 profits ₱150 | 2.50 |
| +250 | ₱100 profits ₱250 | 3.50 |
| -200 | ₱200 profits ₱100 | 1.50 |
| -125 | ₱125 profits ₱100 | 1.80 |
A -125 price staked at ₱125 returns ₱225, which is 125 × 1.80. Every row converts the same way, so you can repeat the sum for any price on a slip.
Converting between the three formats
Four short formulas cover every conversion.
- American plus to decimal: 1 + number ÷ 100, so +150 gives 2.50.
- American minus to decimal: 1 + 100 ÷ number, so -125 gives 1.80.
- Fractional to decimal: 1 + top ÷ bottom, so 3/2 gives 2.50.
- Decimal to American: for 2.00 or above, (decimal − 1) × 100, so 3.00 gives +200. Below 2.00, −100 ÷ (decimal − 1), so 1.25 gives -400.
Check one: 4/5 is 1 + 0.8, which is 1.80, which is -125. All three forms land on the same price.
Implied probability from odds
Implied probability is the chance a price states. The formula is 1 ÷ decimal odds, shown as a percentage.
| Decimal | Calculation | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| 1.25 | 1 ÷ 1.25 | 80.00% |
| 1.50 | 1 ÷ 1.50 | 66.67% |
| 2.00 | 1 ÷ 2.00 | 50.00% |
| 2.50 | 1 ÷ 2.50 | 40.00% |
| 4.00 | 1 ÷ 4.00 | 25.00% |
Use the same step for an invented two-way market priced at 1.80 and 2.10. That is 55.56% plus 47.62%, which totals 103.17%, and the 3.17 points above 100 is the margin built into the prices. The vig meaning explainer shows how to strip it out, and prices like these multiply together in an NBA parlay price example.
Odds mistakes to fix before you stake
You read +150 as 1.50.
Convert it: 1 + 150 ÷ 100 = 2.50. A ₱100 stake returns ₱250, not ₱150.
You read 5/2 as 2.5 and expect ₱250 back on ₱100.
Fractional odds show profit only. 5/2 profits ₱250 and returns ₱350 including the stake.
A minus price looks like a loss.
The minus sign marks the favourite. -200 means ₱200 stakes profit ₱100, and the matching decimal price is 1.50.
FAQ
What is the meaning of odds in betting?
Odds are the price a book puts on an outcome. They tell you what a winning stake returns, and they imply a probability, which is 1 divided by the decimal odds.
How do I convert American odds to decimal?
For a plus number, divide by 100 and add 1, so +150 becomes 2.50. For a minus number, divide 100 by the number and add 1, so -200 becomes 1.50.
Which odds format is easiest to read?
Decimal odds are the quickest, because stake times the number is your total return. A ₱100 stake at 1.80 returns ₱180.
